今日は、歯周病の原因のお話です。
歯周病は歯の周りに起きる炎症性の病気で、原因は細菌性のプラークです。
言い換えれば歯周病はプラーク中の細菌によって起こる感染症なんですね。
細菌は外的から身を守るために歯の表面にネバネバしたフィルム状の集落をつくって生息しています。
これをバイオフィルムと呼びます。
このバイオフィルムのことを一般的にはプラークと呼びます。
よくテレビのコマーシャルで耳にする「プラークコントロール頑張りましょうね！」はこのことなんですね。
このバイオフィルムは細菌にとって強力なバリアとして機能していて、抗生物質や生体の防御機構が効かなくなってしまうのです。
このバイオフィルムのために感染症である歯周病に抗生物質を投与しても効果がないのです。
また、ネバネバしていて水に溶けない性質があるので除去することがとっても大変です。
唯一、取り除ける方法が、歯ブラシなんです。
歯ブラシだけがこのバイオフィルムを破壊することができるのです。
毎日の歯ブラシが、歯周病の治療、予防に直結しているんですね。
